The best advice for students with ADD is to own it. It is no more fundamental than having brown eyes, red hair or being over 6'1. Having ADD is a part of each individual and can be a great thing once you learn how to manage it. Students who learn how to work with their ADD become tremendously focused in school. They become creative, entrepreneurial and creative. They discover opportunities that other's may not find. Taking short breaks while studying is a great way to remain focused and alert. Using a timer to break assignments into shorter chunks can help remind you of your thoughts and accomplish more tasks. Stay positive.

Having multiple tasks to accomplish for your education can often be challenging and uncomfortable at times, but if you look to the bright side, they will always feel easier. Make lists, use a whiteboard and use a colorful planner. Getting a tutor can make sense if you are struggling to understand the material. If the teacher is not clear, having someone explain things in another way can make all the difference. Having books on tape can be helpful if you are not big on reading long novels or textbooks. There are also free versions of online textbooks to listen to online. Another thing to think about is how to set reminders for yourself about upcoming assignments for your classes. There are almost always short and long term assignments to prepare for. Having post it notes or neon tabs attached to your agenda, calendar, textbook or notes can help remind you to review, study or finish short tasks. Planning your day to allow for a 20 minute block of time set aside to memorize and prepare for a quiz three days before the due date can help focus and memory skills. Setting a timer while studying can also help so that you know how long you spent and can take a short break to walk, stretch or take a quick break. Using coping mechanisms like these can make all the difference in how well you utilize study time and prepare your short and long term papers, projects and assignments.
